Abnormal Bleeding
What is abnormal bleeding?
Abnormal bleeding refers to menstrual bleeding that falls outside of what’s considered normal. A normal menstrual cycle lasts 28-34 days and includes up to eight days of bleeding. If your cycle is out of the norm, then your bleeding may be considered abnormal.
Signs that indicate abnormal bleeding include:
- Bleeding longer than eight days
- Bleeding between periods
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Bleeding after menopause
- Shorter or longer menstrual cycle
You may experience abnormal bleeding at any time. However, it’s not uncommon for women to experience abnormal bleeding during the onset of menses or as they reach menopause. However, whether you’re at the beginning or end of your fertility, if there are abnormalities with your bleeding, you should contact Dr. Nikkhah Abyaneh for an evaluation.
What are common causes of abnormal bleeding?
You can experience abnormal bleeding for many reasons. Some of the most common causes include:
- Fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Polycystic ovary syndrome
- Problems with an intrauterine device
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Miscarriage
- Polyps
- Ovarian cysts
- STDs
Certain types of gynecological cancer, such as uterine, also cause abnormal bleeding.
What happens during an evaluation for abnormal bleeding?
Dr. Nikkhah Abyaneh provides comprehensive, high-quality care when you come to the office with concerns about abnormal bleeding. Her goal during your evaluation is to identify the cause of your bleeding so she can provide the best treatment.
During your evaluation, she reviews your symptoms and medical and gynecological history. She also conducts a physical and pelvic exam and may recommend diagnostic testing, such as an ultrasound, MRI, or blood work. She may also test for STDs.
What are the treatments for abnormal bleeding?
Treatment for your abnormal bleeding depends on the underlying cause. Dr. Nikkhah Abyaneh creates personalized treatment plans based on your specific health needs. Your treatment options may include:
- Hormonal birth control to regulate your cycle and bleeding
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Tranexamic acid, a medication that decreases bleeding during menstruation
- Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHA), to shrink a fibroid
You may also benefit from an endometrial ablation if you suffer from heavy bleeding, although this is only recommended if you have no future pregnancy plans. Other surgical procedures may be recommended depending on the cause of your abnormal bleeding.
